The Skills Gap

The Skills Gap

After watching the 60 Minutes report, (link below), discuss the following in your post, and posted conversations during the week:

Despite the fact that the U.S. has a very high unemployment rate, there are some career areas where there are thousands of jobs available that can't be filled.  Why is this?

What can be done - who, according to the video, should have a greater role in this? Who do YOU think should handle the training - or the cost of the training?

As you've thought about what career path you might follow, have you considered the schooling or training that's required?

Be sure to discuss all of these questions, at least in your first post.

  1. There are many unfilled jobs in manufacturing due to people not being qualified. The companies should handle the training, if the people show that they are capable of learning it. They could look at the applicants' high school transcripts, and tell who is willing to learn by their grades. I have thought of schooling for jobs I am interested in. For most jobs you can get the necessary training for at a two year college, and most two year college's are easily affordable.

    1. Ya you don't need a full 4 years for most jobs if you just get 2 you should be able to apply for most trade jobs and stuff.

    2. Yah I agree, company's should be providing training instead of telling them to go spend 50 thousand on a 4 year college and then pay it off and then maybe you can make some money.

    3. Yes a lot of jobs might be looking for workers, but the workers who don't have jobs can't work there because they don't have the qualification.

    4. I also agree with Nathan because for a lot of jobs you do not need 4 years of college a lot just require 2 depending on what you want to do.

  2. i think that the people that want these jobs need to go to college even if you don't have the money get a lone you could be in debt for a bit but then you could pay it off if you get the job there are always people looking for machine workers. the reason why is because no one wants to put in the work. i plan on going to college

    1. Ya college can be a good option for certain jobs but others i don't think you have to go.

    2. Ya but also having college debt on your plate puts a lot more stress on you in general then having to find the job that can sustain you. With covid around I know multiple people that are lost after graduating. Certain people second guess after graduating. I guess you just have to have the right plan.

    3. Some times jobs provide you with experience that you can use to get a better job.

    4. I agree you need college to get that kind of job

    5. I agree with you because people with paying jobs can't afford college to pay for the job the person gets it's the buisness
      that pays for that job.

  3. I think if people can sit outside on a sidewalk and ask for money they can say welcome to Walmart or welcome too McDonalds. And I don't think college is necessary to get a good job if you're in the right field but most people should probably go to college and find a good job that way. At the end of the day everyone just wants to make easy money and put no work in.

    1. I agree, people just want easy money and put to effort into getting it. If people want a decent paying job they need to put work in.

    2. i agree. people just want money handed to them. and college isnt always needed for a lot of jobs. college just gives people a little boost into their career. plus with covid it seems like no one wants to work or go to college and just get their stimulus check.

    3. I agree, in smaller towns like here you can get tons of jobs without a college degree. Sure having a degree can help you get a few better paying jobs, but there are still many well paying jobs you don't need a degree for.

    4. i agree you could always go into a trade they always need workers and people are willing to train you also from what i hear you can make a decent amount of money.

    5. i agree everyone don't wanna work hard for money anymore they want it handed to them for minimum to no work

  4. I think its because most people dont have the income to get the income, you have to start somewhere whether you like it or not. College today is so expensive that everyday people live the same lives they graduate high school and as they have been told they go off to college and manage to pass the 4 years or 2 years whatever they chose, and they realize they finally graduated college and now they're in massive debt and now they have to learn to manage it and find a job am-mist this covid world we live in, jobs are hard to find today. But either way people today should be finding a way around this, teaching the new generation instead of teaching them they need college.

    1. i totally agree. all college does in put you in extreme amount of debt and most people who do college dont even carry on with they career they chose. and with covid being around all college classes are online making it way harder to graduate.

    2. A lot of times with community colleges, you can get over 70% of your classes covered by grants. But the problem is most people don't apply for them their senior year. And they end up paying the whole tuition theirself. So if you want to do your future self a favor, apply for all the grants you can your senior year.

    3. i agree collage is a gamble you don't know what your gonna get if the terms of an education and if thats the case and your unsure go into a trade they always need workers and people are willing to teach you.

    4. i agree collage price are lots of money and a lot of people don't wanna go and take the chance of not getting job for it and be out all that money

  5. i think is you want a certain job youre gonna have to go to college especially if youre operating heavy machinery. me personally am going to a trade school after high school and am getting my welding degree. i feel like college just puts you into more debt but if you want a certain job that pays a lot college is needed. these jobs are unfilled because people are not qualified. however because college puts you in debt like i said, i think the companies should be in charge of their training.

  6. I believe there is a bunch of jobs that can't be filled because many people don't have the qualification for the job. If you want a good job with decent money you will have to put some work in, or school. A good job doesn't just come knocking on your door.

  7. There is a lot of jobs that have opening but a lot of people don't reach the criteria of the job or meet the qualifications. The only thing that you can do is put work in on your own and reach that goal because after college and everything is over you will have a decent paying job and make it much better in life.

  9. 1 may jobs like machinery has opportunities for jobs but have no one trained in that field to work there. 2 according to the video the employers should help train these unskilled workers and i agree so far it seems to be working why change something that is clearly working. 3 the job i was thinking about is a trade specifically i want to be an electrician so no i hope i wouldn't need to go to collage.

  11. I think the reason that some jobs have high an unemployment rate is because a lot of people are not qualified. Companies should train people if people are capable of learning it. I'll do training or schooling for a job I want to do.

  12. most jobs have a high unemployment because most people don't wanna take the time to go into training or collage they want the jobs handed to them and and most people today are addicted to there phone and if they don't pay attention with heave equipment or Cretan tools in a shop they can hurt someone so i thin there should be collage or a training at the work place

I think the company should pay for that training.

  16. I think that most high paying jobs you'd have to go to college for right? I think you should really know what you wanna go in for when you go to college because when most people go into college they end up doing something later on that changed. College is a lot of money not everyone can afford it

  17. I think for special high paying jobs your gonna have to go to some type of school or just a training program but to get simple jobs like the food industry or working at groscery stores you obviously don't need schooling but your not gonna be paid enough.

    ReplyDelete
  18. A lot of people of want a high paying job until they find out how much work they have to put in just to get that job. Then some of them don't put in the work and up working at a gas station. Some people decide that no matter how much work they have to put in, they want that job so badly that they are gonna go to a college and get a degree in business management or whatever they're going for. Most people in this generation are lazy, have no work ethic, and think they should get what they want just because they asked. College can be very expensive but if they really want it they'll work for it.

  19. all people want is money but dont want to work for it so they get low income jobs and have to work a lot more to support there household.
