The Data Brokers

The Data Brokers

After watching these 60 Minutes videos, discuss how you feel about the business of selling private information:

1. Should it be legal? People willingly put their information into questionnaires and online surveys, so marketers or "data brokers" are just using information that people have put out on the internet.

2. What, if anything, should be done about the practice?

3. If you've filled out a survey or shared personal information with a company, did you have any idea that they'd be able to sell your information?

4. From the second video, what do you think about the steps the woman takes to protect her privacy?

  1. i feel like it should be illegal to steal peoples info, why do they even need your information and why are they tracking where you are? not many people know/believe that the media takes your info and tracks you. just because someone gives out their info online without any intensions of anyone seeing it, doesnt give them the right to steal/sell it. like who knew if you fill out a survey that company can steal your info. i wouldnt go as far as the women did to protect her info but at least im aware and i know to be more careful

    2. I agree, makes me wonder why they want to track where we are and what for. Kind of creepy and gets your thinkin going but it is insane how many sites are out there to steal and sell your info. Like what do they need it for?

    3. A lot of companies take peoples info and sell them to advertisers. For example if you are on a news website, and read a lot of articles about dogs, your advertisements will start to be for dog food, and dog toys. Advertisers buy your info for the reason that it is cheaper than spamming everyone with a specific ad. The companies could either show the ad to 1 million people, and only around 23% might have a dog. Or they could buy peoples info, and show the ad to 230,000 people, and have a much higher success rate on people wanting what is being advertised.

    4. Yes. Just buying one thing on line can lead to many more emails for you to buy other things.

    5. i can see why they they use our info but like they could at least let us know. we all had that moment of "the government is listening to us" when i know a lot of us didnt know they were STEALING our information and making money off it. people need to be more aware of things like these

    6. I agree with letting the person know. But a lot of info is stored in cookies. So when a website says it uses cookies, and people click agree without reading what it says they are agreeing to let the website track them. It is illegal in the E.U. for a website to use cookies without the users consent. So cookie popups come from sites based in the E.U.. If you don't want U.S. based sites to take your info you can click the menu on the top right of your chrome window. Click settings, then click search settings, and type cookie in. Scroll down a bit, click cookies and other site data, scroll down a bit again, then click block third party cookies. You can block all cookies, but I wouldn't recommend it as there are 2 types of cookies third party cookies, and first party cookies. First party cookies are good, they save usernames, and passwords, and items in online shopping carts. Third party cookies are the ones that track you.

    7. Also you can click "send a do not track request with your browsing traffic" in the cookies and other site data settings. It is a bit under the block third party cookies option.

    8. Well, they're not really stealing, but they're definitely not being up front about it. They sell the info to companies that want to market their products to people. To advertise.

  2. 1. I don't think it should be illegal because the people know that there is people out there that will take your information. But I also don't think it is right to do.

    2. I don't really think they can solve the problem but they might be able to minimize it a little bit.

    3. yes, I know that people can take what you put on the internet and sell it.

    4. I think she does too much just to make her personal information private.

    1. I don't think they can really solve the problem much either. The surveys and stuff they put out to steal don't always pop up it wouldn't be easy to find all the websites that do so.

      Delete
    2. i agree, theres not really anything that can be done to solve the problem.

    3. i agree people are childish nowadays and het everything over a screen

  3. Well I don't think it's okay to take people's information so no it probably should not be legal. Your data and personal stuff you put online such as your address shouldn't be shared. Its concerning hearing that companies/businesses can sell your information. I'm curious why or what for. There's a lot of data sharing, tracking, and i'm sure cyber security threats around the internet. For example you could look up a pair of shoes you want and sooner or later you will start seeing adds about them. Companies definitely do it because they want you to buy their stuff. Adds can also pop up asking if you want to take a survey for a chance to steal your information. I don't think there are any internet privacy laws so there's not much you can do. I am thinking as long as you play it safe on the web and not search anything that isn't good or put out any information on unfamiliar websites you should be fine.

    1. I agree with you, information on all of us is available. It is easy to look up someone and find out a lot about them, you shouldnt sell that information. That is wrong.

      Delete
    2. Yes i agree with you because people who take private information and put it all over the internet is when it is shown to strangers or other people.

      Delete
    3. I agree they shouldn't put there information online if they didn't want to be shown.

  4. 1. If they aren't like getting my credit card info and use it or get my address and start sharing it to everyone if this happens it should be illegal

    2. I don't think anything will happen with it and if something does happen I think it won't affect that much

    3. Yes I know people have info on me

    4. I think she takes it too much

  5. It should be legal in most cases. A lot of sold information is used to better improve the site, or target ads to specific people. Advertisers will buy peoples info, see that they are a good target for a specific ad, then show it to them. The kind of data selling that should be illegal is when they are selling credit card numbers, social security numbers, and email addresses. They should make it a crime to sell private info, and if the owner of the website is caught they should have to pay to recover the peoples info. I knew surveys took peoples info, because what is the point of a survey if you can't get results. I think the person was taking far too many steps to protect her privacy, she should have just avoided the sites. Also the sites were probably taking her info to better improve the way that they work. If 90% of a news websites viewers first viewed articles on global news. The company is going to want to get articles out about global news more often. Without a persons information it would be hard to know what to post.

    1. yes agree one hundred percent with you nathan no info should be sold on the internet

    2. your right your info should not be sold to other people

  6. I don't think it should be legal, but if it's absolutely necessary then they should put a big warning in the site saying what they are going to do with your information before you submit it. I think everyone has filled out a survey and I'm sure over 50% didn't know they might sell your information. I think the woman has very smart ideas to keep everything private, like the phone cover thing so it wouldn't track her.

    1. I agree they should have warning or something on their site that notifies you that they can take your info. The girl was being very smart about what she was doing with the phone.

    2. It shouldn't be legal and i agree with the big warning that your info might be shared.

      Delete
    3. They do have a warning. Not many people know this but when a website says it uses cookies, and asks for your permission that is the warning. Any E.U. based site needs to have that warning on it. For U.S. based sites if you go to the first comment, and read my 2nd reply, I have the instructions on how to turn off third party cookies.

    4. Yes i agree because people should share any information on cell phones or tablets

    5. I agree they should ask for their permission first if they want their information on the internet.

    6. i agree, you shouldn't have to share your info unless its necessary.

  7. I do not think it should be legal to take others information and sell it. That is wrong, even if the person provided it. The woman tried to be careful with her information. If some people want to know about you, they will find a way to get it.

  8. i think it should be legal to a certain extent when it asks for info that is like social security or credit card when your not trying to buy something it should be common sense not to tell them that

    1. I agree its your fault if you give important info to others.

    2. true. a lot of people dont think all the way and just hand out info like its nothing.

      Delete
    3. I agree it's kinda your own fault if you do that

      Delete
    4. I agree if you put in information like that and something happens well thats just your fault

  9. I don't think that it should be legal. Sites should not be able to sell your information without your consent. But the thing is you shouldn't put your information into weird sites or sites your not familiar with because you info is more likely to be given out to others.

    1. i agree. like its not right for them to steal others info but then again people do put their personal info all over the internet

    5. I agree, but you gotta think that if they make this data broker thing illegal they will just forcefully take our info, or stuff hidden allegations in terms & conditions of certain apps or websites.

  10. I think it should be illegal because there has been an ad that popped up on my phone and I was talking about that item that day so I don't think they should be able to listen to me

  15. Personally, I believe it shouldn't exactly be downright illegal but there should be more projection of the info concerning data brokers and other information that is easily taken from you. I think the practice should be more controlled by higher ups, instead of people just looking to sell your info. Up until the day we started learning about data brokers all I knew really about mass info being takes was the whole facebook security breach. I think that the lady in the video was portrayed to be overprotective but i mean you go to the lengths to make yourself feel safe, but she shouldn't have to go through all that strenuous work just to feel like she "protected" from the dark side of the internet.

  20. I don't necessarily believe it should be illegal. If you don't wanna put your information into some site, then back out of the site. If you feel comfortable sharing your information then it is up to you. I don't really think there is much we can do to try and stop people from selling our info besides not giving it out. Yes, I did know that they sell your information.
