Your Online Image #2

You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.

What might you find that would make you not hire someone?

Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?

Below are a couple of articles that talk about how employers use social media to help screen applicants.

  1. if someone had done a very serious crime like a murder. the second thing would be if they do drugs. and third if they are shown to be racist.

  2. They could be very rude, disrespectful and posting things that are not necessary. NO it is not wrong to use facebook in this way because facebook isn't private so at this point if you don't want what could be your future boss to see what you post then don't post it at all.

    3. I agree with the part that says if you don't want your boss to see don't post it at all, some things just need to be kept private.

    1. I agree, times change and people do to, nobody should be judged by their own beliefs but there is a definitive line between what it means to be good or bad to society.

    2. I agree people can change over time they can't be judged foe the past

  4. a reason that could lead them to not getting hired is posting stuff that is racist, anything disrespecting men or women, etc. if they see you dont respect certain things then they wont expect you to respect them. i dont think its bad to use facebook this way because facebook is not private and anyone can see it

    1. i agree, they could find out that the applicant has a history of racism or sexism, etc. anything like that and i highly doubt that applicant is getting the job.

    2. I agree, people shouldn't use stereotypes to hire but also is kinda good to have an insight of how good of a person this potential employee is.

    3. i agree especially in this day and age saying any thing like that could get you in hole you can't dig your self out of

  5. You may find some things out about them from their past that you won't like that come off as a big negative for them getting a job. You might find out they have a history of something bad, and you wouldn't want someone who you can't trust working for you. I personally don't think its wrong for Facebook, Instagram and other social medias to be used this way, i think it's a great way for someone to find out a lot more about the person that has applied for the job.

    4. Yes i agree with you because people may find out about what you are posting on social media online or on facebook.

  6. I don't think employers checking social media while hiring someone is wrong at all. I think it's good because then they get to know a little about a person, how they act, and what they post about before hiring them.

    1. I agree because if you want to know the person you can look for Information for that person. You will also know they will be great for the job.

    2. I agree, with what you post online can show a lot about you and having an employer look at them will help show them what type of person you are

  7. I wouldn't hire anyone that is being rude about somebody else. If you hire them they may insult a customer online, and you could lose business that way. There is nothing wrong with using facebook to look at job applicants profiles. You may find that they lied about something on their application, or are known to skip work. Employers cannot see teenagers criminal record so they may be able to find out if they have committed any crimes by looking at their social media. I doubt many people would post that they committed a crime but it could happen.

    1. I agree, you want to make sure they're capable of a job and responsible. You don't want a drug addict working for you, especially you would expect them to even show up to work like that. So checking their media is some what important hiring.

    2. I agree anyone can sit behind a screen and post but not many thing about what they are actually doing.

    1. I agree with you. Many people may post about how they didn't do their work at their old job, or how much they hated working. Social media can help you figure out more about the person than just interviewing can.

  10. I think that it isn't a bad thing that employers check social media while hiring someone. You may find history of bad things they may have done or that are on their accounts. I mean before hiring someone you're gonna want to make sure that they don't have a bad name. I think using media to help figuring out more about the person is good. You don't personally know the person; it's good to get an idea of who they are and what they have done.

    1. I agree especially if it is their first job. They can't call their previous job for reference, and find out if they did anything bad.

    2. i agree and if it their first job to see how they may act and see what they do away from work

      Delete
    3. I agree because what if they do have bad history at previous jobs you would have no clue.

    4. Yes i agree with you because employers might get to know the person that they are hiring.

  11. Using facebook to look about and applicant is not a bad idea because it is all public information so giving them a background check on a applicant is a good idea

  12. The employer find people who are getting fired from a job.
Yes i think its ok to go on social media because i would not post bad things.

  13. The employer might find they got fired on their last job. Yes I think it's ok to go on Facebook to find information on a person because I wouldn't put anything bad on their.

  14. Your current boss or any future boss could see the things you post. Hopefully its nothing bad that would change there idea of hiring you. They could fine nasty and inappropriate things on your account so you should be careful about it.

  15. I'm between yes and no theres a massive difference between someones social life and their work ethic. Just as an example someone could be a huge republican and an employer sees that they love trump and the employer doesn't he's gonna think to immediately go out of their page which is super unfair and unorthodox .

  16. The employer might find out stuff like if the applicant is known for partying and being a slacker off of looking at his or her facebook and i think it is fine to look at their facebook because it was their choice to post what they did

    1. I agree, if you see that the person is a party animal and not responsible then you know not to hire them.
