What To Do About Misinformation?

What To Do About Misinformation?

Social Media Is a Huge source of information - not all of it is GOOD information. Urban legends, myths, conspiracy theories "deep fakes" and other types of false information are everywhere, and it can be difficult to determine what is really true. It's bad enough if this type of information would affect or even harm us individually, but we know that it can also affect us on a global scale, such as influencing an election (and not just the US elections).

Obviously, we have to learn how to identify information that might be biased or untrue - but what about those sources that host the information, such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube? What responsibilities do they have?

The 60 Minutes video we watched in class talks about YouTube and its policies regarding invalid or harmful information. What do you think? Should entities like YouTube, Facebook, etc. be responsible for blocking or identifying misinformation, or should it be the responsibility of the viewer to educate themselves about how to spot "fake news"?

  1. Yes I think some things need to be blocked. There can be a lot of graphic and inappropriate things that can be posted. At the same time though if it is history or is trying to prove a point then it should be allowed to be on there. When people are posting things they should also be a lot more responsible about it.

    1. I think that some of the bad stuff should be blocked but if you cant hang with it dont be on the site.

    2. honestly. like some videos get taken down for no reason all because some people are easily offended. people should have to qualify for something to be able to post on youtube so they are fully aware of what they can or cant post.

    3. i agree completely history should be protected so we can learn for history's mistakes.

    4. I agree, but youtube probobly struggles to keep all bad content off their site. The very few bad ones that are on youtube and facebook will probobly eventually be taken down once they spot that its bad.

    5. I agree, but with the graphic videos that are for educational purposes I think they should make it very known that it is only allowed to be posted for educational purposes.

    6. The youtube guidelines say that content containing real life graphic content is only allowed if it is strictly educational. Such as medical procedures, but they do add a age restriction. People can still post gory content, but need to have context such as if it is from a movie/tv show, and it can be age restricted depending on how bad it is. If it isn't fictional, or educational it will be removed.

  2. I think they should take a lot more responsibility to remove fake new and miss information it is their sights so they should manage them better before something even worse happens because of the miss information.

    1. I disagree, because if miss information gets missed someone is going to find it and report it if its break whatever's the term and service on the site

  3. Social Media platforms try there best to block bad videos and inappropriatte things. They are never going to be able to block all the videos because there is too many. So in a way they should be responsible but at the same time its difficult to catch all bad posts.

    2. I agree but the people watching the videos need to be more smart and not watch the stuff they don't want to see

    3. I agree, I think if someone is caught more than once posting bad stuff they should suspend their account so then maybe they will learn.

    4. i agree, they are not going to be able to take down every single video before at least one them goes viral

  4. I think these sites should be responsible for blocking and identifying the fake news and inappropriate videos. I believe they should somehow check the video over while the person is trying to upload it so it would even be posted, but I don't think that's possible yet.

    1. I agree it should be allowed to be blocked by the site before the video even goes up on the internet.

    2. Me too I feel like youtube should set up a program where in order for someone to post publicly they would have to approve the video.

    3. i agree. ive always thought youtube should have a feature to where your video must be confirmed before even being posted. i think it would help their situation a lot.

    4. I agree with you because youtube is bad for posting bad videos on social media
Youtube should be taking down videos that are bad.

    5. i agree, the video being uploaded should be approved before posted

  5. media tries to block any kind of graphic, violence, disturbing content, and as much fake news as they can. however, with platforms like youtube its almost impossible to delete every single video. i believe they should be responsible for most things, but also people posting the videos should be too. people should understand what should and shouldnt be posted. youtube also has age restricted videos so it acts like a perental advisor which helps a lot

    1. I agree because people are running the web sites can't go through all the videos plus it's our responsibility to know not to upload bad or fake videos.

  6. I think it's good youtube takes down the inappropriate and bad videos. There is a lot of videos posted a day so it is hard for them to take them all down. There's also a lot of fake news so it will take a lot of identifying the little aspects they see. People can be gullible and believe any video that was edited telling fake news. Really graphic, inappropriate language/content, ect; Should be taken down the best it can and since are responsible for it.

    1. I agree, as long as you find the right sources to listen to and don't believe certain videos from sketchy channels.

    2. I agree, watch what you are there to watch and just remember in the back of your head that not everything your watching is true. stay clear of news videos you feel are phony.

    3. I agree, you just have to keep in mind everything you watch and read isn't true, so think before you tell someone about a fake news video.

    4. i agree, if people are dumb enough to believe everything they see on the internet then thats their problem. as long as youtube takes care of the disturbing and unbearable videos everything should be fine.

  7. youtube has good things and bad things some stuff that goes up could be bad like the logan paul sucide forrest a few years back and got backlash and youtube didn't take it down either just let it stay up until he had to take it down himself

    1. Yes i agree most youtubers do get a lot of bad opinions on their videos.

    2. I agree, certain videos should be delt with faster than having to be taken down by its owner due to hate and bash about a video.

      Delete
    3. yeah that incident proves that they are not taking full responsibility for what remains on their sight.

      Delete
    4. Yeah, I agree. Some youtubers don't think of what they're posting and how bad it is or what the consequences are. His account ended up being suspended for a long time because of that fault.

    5. I agree they should've taken that down

    6. I agree with you because youtube has some bad videos. There are too many videos on youtube It's hard for youtube to catch up.

  8. Everyone here is saying websites should try to take inappropriate videos down. The concept is great but its execution is very hard. You can have bots/people spam bad content on many accounts very quickly. The bad videos are near impossible to find on youtube because of the way results are filtered. You will get things with many views before you get anything bad. You would have to search for hours to find something graphic or inappropriate. A lot of the time 1 or more people can flag a video, and it will be gone in a few hours. Other social media websites prevent bad things from showing up to casual people browsing. They have NSFW (Not suitable for work) features so you need to click the video to see it, or they will have content warnings. It is too easy for people to post bad things that it is impossible to prevent, besides adding AI that detects blood/gore, and sends the video to a moderator for review. They could add a system where you need to have your account for a set period of time before you post, making it harder for people to make burner accounts to spam post bad content on youtube.

As for misinformation it will always be a problem, but you can prevent it by getting info from news stations. If it is something that sounds like it can't be true, news places such as CNN, MSN, and FOX will jump on the story as more people will read things that are surprising to them. So for the most part people will have to rely on only trusted sources for news, not random internet strangers whose posts are all fake sounding or not even possible.

TLDR; The internet is too large to filter everything out. The casual person browsing will not see anything bad on youtube. Misinformation is easily avoided by only reading things by trusted sources.

    1. I agree with you, because some videos can slip through the cracks but it will still be hard to find inappropriate videos.

  9. I think that taking down really bad videos or posts should be censored like with a little this video contains graphic content and a button for you to click to continue to watch. I think that if you cant handle watching a bad video that shouldn't look it up or be on the site where that the video is on.

    1. A few websites have already implemented this feature, such as reddit. It prevents people from seeing NSFW content such as gore. The problem is that many websites do not want inappropriate content on their platform. They try their best to take them down, but it is still a challenge due to the number of things that are posted every hour. More than 300 hours of content is uploaded to youtube every minute. There is no way to check every video posted. So people need to report the videos to have them checked by moderators. But in general most people will never see a bad video on youtube unless it is posted by somebody with a lot of subscribers. But it still is a very great idea.

    2. And actually youtube does have an age restriction feature. But as most people lie about their age it won't do anything for them. Content that is NSWF will have an age restriction so you can't view it if you aren't signed in or under 18.

      Delete
    3. I agree some people can watch that stuff and are fine with it so they should just warn you then if you don't like graphics you can click off of the video.

      Delete
    4. yes i think some videos and pictures should be getting taken down

    5. I agree I think the bad, graphic videos should just have a warning before them and then it should be okay.

  10. Youtube has good and bad things and whether or not they should block things or have the viewer educate them selfs on whats fake news or not. what if its a younger person that doesn't know any better than to believe its true

  11. Youtube is a hole of fake news and disturbing video you can see at anytime, but youtube has a system of filters to take down as many videos they can. Which means as soon as a video goes up it will be up for a few minutes but sometimes they can be up for days or duplicated by other people. Certain people will spend half their life to keep certain videos up. Which can be a bigger problem and also youtube can give almost everyone a voice whether it's peaceful or not. But the only thing is whether you believe it or not, to have a mindset of disbelief when on youtube when seeing controversial things is key.

  16. yes i think something's should be blocked because of the bad pictures and mean text because some people are immature

  17. I think you tube and face book should block things that are untrue. They would have to find out what is true and not in order to know what to post and what to block.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think social media platforms really do try their best to take down as many inappropriate videos as they can, but there is probably so much content being uploaded every minute. So it's practically impossible to take down every inappropriate video being uploaded. I also think before a video is to be uploaded it should be approved before being able to post.
