Deepfakes & Democracy

Deepfakes & Democracy

Every day, we see -- and create! -- countless images and videos that have been edited or digitally altered. From simple Snapchat filters to short, lighthearted, or ironic TikTok videos, it’s clear that seeing and creating altered media is just part of online life today.

But are you aware of -- or have you thought about -- the phenomenon of 'deepfake videos'? As you watch the videos, consider these questions:

Why are faked images and videos so popular?

How might AI or deepfake technology subvert or threaten a democratic election?

How does the existence of this new technology change the way we see the world?

  1. They are so popular because they are everywhere constantly trying to change the way people see things. It can affect the way people vote in an election. It affects the world because if people see one fake video it spreads around fast and it can't just be undone. It also changes the world because a lot of people believe everything on the internet.

    1. I agree, one fake video can get around very quickly and people just start assuming stuff before really looking into it.

    2. I agree things can be put on people and turn things sour so quickly due to everyone playing the blame game.

    4. I agree because people do believe what they read on the internet. Sometime they don't check if it is fake.

    5. I think Kylee is totally right when she talks about how it can effect election. You could change somebodies speeches to say totally wrong things and it will be a complete lie.

  2. The reason that faked images, and videos are so popular might be because people believe they are real. Then they share the video, and it keeps going from there, it will take a while until they figure out it is fake, and when they do they probably won't care. It could effect the results of an election very easily. You could fake a presidential candidate saying something very controversial, or racist. Then people would see it on social media, it could go viral, and by the time they say it is fake the damage has been done. Not everyone who saw the original post is going to see that it was fake or, they will think it was a lie. It really doesn't change the way we see the world much. The videos require a lot of time, and skill to create, so there are not that many out there compared to real videos.

    1. I agree because everything people see on the internet they think its real first before it being fake crosses their mind. This way a lot of false information can spread around very quickly.

    2. I also agree because people think the first video they see or image is what to believe without doing research their minds just automatically think it's true. Then the people who do believe the fake posts spread it around and then by that time it is too late to delete it.

    3. I also agree with you, People are gullible and believe anything on social media with all the fake news, deep faking pics/vids. No one looks up and gets their research anymore which is also why deep faking isn't good.

    4. I also agree with you, fake images and videos are made so people believe and think of a person differently and can cause serious problems.

    5. I also agree with you because people don't look up the source of the video and they will believe it.

  4. I think deep faking images is very dangerous because you can make people say things that they would never say. Like people could make the president say bad things about someone or something and it could be taken very out of proportion.

  5. this technology changes everything when you want to watch clips of a debate from the 2 presidential candidates how would you know if one side of the dems or republicans deep faked the video to make you think that there party member wants to do this but doesn't want to do something really important for the country. or even actors saying something that is false

    1. That is a very good point. It makes it so that you can only trust the news to publish real videos, as they film them as they happen. The problem is that people use social media more than tv to get the news, and in result more people will see a fake video, then a real one.

    2. I agree it is hard to know if something is real or fake when all these fake videos get put out there

    3. Yes i agree with you because people can make a video of the President saying things he didn't say.

    4. yeah this could cause a lot of problems in the future as this technology improves i can only imagine deep fake in 2030 would it be the regular for people to do this?

  6. I think deep faking images or videos is not right. Deep faking to make someone look bad or to try to make other people change their opinion on that person is not right.

    1. I AGREE WITH YOU IT IS NOT RIGHT TO CHANGE SOMEONES APERANCE ON THE INTERNET BECAUSE IT WILL BE THERE FOREVER

    2. I agree because people should make their own decisions, not watching videos on social media.

  7. The deep fake videos can be very bad because it can take any video of someone and change it so they say something totally different. This can make people be seen as bad people when really its just people changing it and its not actually them. At the same time though it can be really helpful in the making of movies and things like that.

  8. deep faking images and videos are popular because instead of telling people want they NEED to hear, they tell them what they WANT to hear. they can also take advantage of the viewers by making videos that seem real so people will believe them. a lot of politicians make ads about the person they are running up against and say bad things about them so you would choose them instead. its all a setup.

    1. I agree, the elections today could be so easily rigged and blown way out of disproportion. All we can do is hope theres a definite way to tell the fake from the real.

    2. I completely agree, now the video/image could go viral but people will also probably figure fake damage has been done. Like is someone had seen the original video of the election and compared it you would be able to see how false it is.

    3. Thats very true deep fake videos are created to make people hear what they want and not what they need to hear.

  9. They're so popular due to the controversy around them and how easy it is to make anybody say or do anything. It could easily damage the election by faking speeches/ false statements. This makes me see the world how it really is people getting after other people for different opinions i've known about the technology but i never thought about how it could effect the population and our elections. But in one part of the video was them determining wether the video was fake but i see this tech as useless if they are able to determine whether it's a fake or not. I just hope we continue on with a way to analyze these videos to make sure which one is fake.

  10. I think deep faking images/videos is dangerous because someone could easily take a video off the election speeches and make it into a false speech to maybe make them look bad. People can be gullible and believe it which could possibly lead to many different things.

    1. Yeah especially knowing some people in our country gullible is an understatement. But there are some non brain dead people who can get fooled and thats when this becomes a huge problem.

    2. i agree it is very dangerous

    3. agreed. im sure you guys have seen the videos and memes people have made about trump and biden making them look bad. if you can convince someone something is real theyll believe it without any real evidence.

  11. with deep fake technology you could pretend to be somebody important like a political figure then say something awful and this would more or less result in this persons credibility to be shattered and their image dashed in the end they would be less popular so no one would vote for them.

    1. I agree, once it is posted not everyone who saw the original video will see the news that it is fake. Then whoever the video portrayed, will have their reputation ruined.

    2. I agree because some a lot of people may not try to find the orginal video to see if it's fake.

    3. I agree because if the word get out that someone running for office said something racist or sexist and theres a video to prove it. That person will lose voters

  12. Deepfake videos can be a very big problem to some people. Especially like the president or someone running for president. Someone can take a well spoken speech and completely change the message and ruin their reputation. And people are getting very very good at it and it becomes very hard to tell the difference between a fake and a real video.
