You're Messed Up!

You're Messed Up!

You're messed up!  You're addicted!

Read the following articles (don't forget to read some of the comments after the articles). They all talk about the effects on teens from social networking, texting, etc - all of this "new" technology.

What are the dangers?  We're not talking about why the internet itself is dangerous - not talking about predators.  We're talking about the quality of life here - your time; how social networking makes you feel about the world, how you feel about YOURSELF, and how it conditions you to behave.  "Real life" vs. "online life".

Your first post should be about what the negative effects of your online life might be. How might things like social networking (Facebook, Twitter) affect you in a negative way? This is a difficult question because you probably don't think that these things really are affecting you negatively.  You can handle it, right?

THEN, after a day or two, in your response to a fellow student's post, argue in FAVOR of social networking - how does it 'enhance' your life - how does it make your life better?

This is a 'deep topic'.  One sentence answers are NOT going to cut it, so really think about your answers, and argue your point.

  1. Sometimes on the internet people put about too much information about themselves. It's also very addictive and keeps kids that are younger indoors when they should be outside enjoying the weather while they are young. It is also very addictive because nowadays that is the only way to keep in contact with people and communicate faster.

    1. Yes, I think that kids should get outside more instead of staying inside watching videos or playing games.

    6. I agree with you because you should enjoy your childhood outside in the fresh air instead of staring at a screen.

    7. i agree. i wish i was a kid again so i could enjoy being outside, riding bikes, and listening to the radio. kids of the younger generation will never know

  2. I think social media does affect kids mental health, and it is very addicting. Being on social media too much might cause you to not realize what you are missing in the real world, you are missing your teenage years because of a phone. There is also lots of cyberbullying that takes a toll on your mental health.

    1. I totally agree. Social media can be very addicting if you don't know how to control your screen time.

    2. agreed. lots of kids have no idea what its like to live your teenage years. we all hear these cool stories from adults who did wild crazy stuff in their teenage years yet it seems like kids now will never experience it because they are glued to their phones.

      Delete
    3. I agree because a phone is taking away from teenage years because they are addicting. Phones are the new outside and it is getting bad.

    4. I think it's ok to be on social media for a few hours a day. Than you have time for other thing.

    5. I agree, so many kids will sit on their games or phones for hours and they're so distracted time just goes by. They end up missing out on alot and you're only young once.

    6. I agree, social media, game consoles, etc. have become so addictive that people sometimes have to be forced to get off and do something else.

  3. I do think that social media does affect kids in a negative way. Kids would rather stay inside and watch a youtube video or play a new game than go outside and play. Kids aren't the only ones affected I think that most teenagers and adults may spend more time than necessary looking at their phone screen.

    2. I agree that it isn't only kids on their phones or electronics but the more the years pass kids are getting electronics way younger then they probably should and that is because of parenting.

    3. i agree with you Eli i admit i'm some what addicted to my phone but know where to the degree that my sister is my parents are also sorta addicted to the internet.

    4. I Agree with Kylee, when she says kids are getting phones and technology to0 early. Young kids are supposed to go outside and play not sit and play games on their phones.

    5. I agree. People need to limit themselves to a short amount of time looking at a screen.

I think social media affects everyone in different ways mental health addiction to apps personality change, not liking the things that you liked to, as well as bullying online the people who bully you online are just as low as the lowest you have been, they're just trying to get you upset don't let that stuff get your head

  5. Social media can be addictive in many ways. One way is when people get likes on their posts it makes them feel good about themselves so then they are always posting and looking for the likes. A major reason why kids are so antisocial is because instead of talking to people in person and interacting in real life they just send a text message and almost hide from reality.

    1. I agree because the internet and texting people instead of talking can cause you to be very antisocial and forget how to talk to people.

    3. i disagree with you on this kids posting on instagram is showing their personality so they can be more social with the people that they think is the best to hangout with them.

  6. social media can have many negative effects on your life. it could feed you false info, people can bully you, people can steal your personal info etc. you could be on social media for hours and it would only feel like 10mins, you can waste the whole day away. some people dont sleep right, eat right, dont exercize properly, ect. its not just the youth that react this way to social media but adults as well. some people should take breaks from social media to maintain a healthy life style.

    1. I agree, the internet can sometimes be a hole most uninformed people can fall into, especially the youth which can teach them the wrong things and can effect so many different factors of their life its crazy.

    2. I completely agree with your statement. I can guarantee almost everyone you know will have a phone or a smart device. Notifications on a phone can also be distracting for instance; You're doing homework you could be notified that your friend is online then you go online and end up playing games because you got distracted. Now your homework won't be done for the next day and your grades and then you will be rushing to get it all done.

  8. I think social media is affecting kids mental health. Some kids spend way too much too much time on social media and there is a lot of information that isn't true out there and kids not knowing any better believe that stuff. Social media is also addicting for most people and they're missing out on a lot of stuff outside of social media.

    1. I disagree with you. The internet in general has true information. The ones that are fake are easily fact checked. There is many useful things on the internet that could save you a lot of money, or time. Also if people believe everything they see on the internet dangerous or not they shouldn't be on the internet. If people can't stop themselves from watching one more video, or playing a few more games they should take a few days off, doing something else. The internet in general is better for you as long as you can control how long you stay on.

    2. i disagree there are many good places on the internet probably more good then bad. there is a lot of information on the internet you just have to have the right sight so you don't spread false rumors

    3. If thats how easy it was for kids to "take a few days off" then why is this the topic some kids have a problem if you asked anyone in this room to take a few days off what do you think there answer will be

    4. Social media helps teens meet friends . I use my phone for an hour each day that ok .

  9. Personally, the internet for me is horrid, people stealing from others, bullying, cyberattacks, etc. But all around its an amazing platform to do anything you can think of. The "online life" thing is probably the dumbest thing ever it puts you in control of how other people perceive you and anybody can find something negative to say, but stuff like that doesn't effect me at all. Some people take it literally but when someone talks negatively about someone, all it is is some random person typing on their phone alone. They cant physically hurt you from typing up a storm, let em type.

  10. the negative aspects of the internet for me is wasted time for example i could be outside but instead essayer on my phone wasting the day away. the second thing is that your private information is far easier to be stolen. third is all this toxicity facebook, twitter, reddit, and other sites are just lined with toxic people.

    1. I agree with you. You are one of the only people that were actually honest. The others said that people spend too much time on the internet, while they also do it. Or that people don't go outside enough when even they don't. They are saying that what they are doing is bad, and won't try to resolve the issue. The issue with toxicity is bad but you can generally avoid it more than you can in real life.

    2. I agree with you. Like you I stay indoors on video games all day wasting my day, but i'm having fun so its not wasting its only wasting the day if it's not fun.

    3. Yes, kids need to stop getting butt hurt from dying in the games, Instead they need to grab a ball and kick it around maybe break a window but hey at least they are living live and expiercing better things than video games.

  12. Social media can be bad because you spend too much time on the internet. If you stay on it too long you will not get your chores done or have a chance to go outside.

  13. Social media can be bad because you are not getting enough sleep at night and not getting exercise. Cyberbullying is not good because it makes teens feel bad about themselves.

  15. I think social media has many bad effects on people. People can stay on for an unhealthy amount of time, or maintain an unhealthy lifestyle because of it. I have been spending more time online since covid has started but I have kept a healthy lifestyle. I go outside daily, and I eat, and sleep regularly. It gets unhealthy at the point that you are not eating or sleeping properly. Overall the internet is great, but you can get addicted easily.

    2. Yeah I agree, sitting on games and social media 24/7 isn't healthy. Kids will stay up all night and end up ruining their sleep schedules playing a game then next morning for school they will have trouble getting up.

    3. I agree, with social media has many bad effects and that people get addicted to it

  16. I think social media has both good and bad affects on kids. It can contribute to someone mental health issues, and can also be a factor towards having people get bullied for what they posted. On the other hand it can be good to help people keep in touch with long distance relatives

  17. I think has many negative effects on people. The first thing is that some people will start believe everything they see. The second thing is cyberbullying because it can make some people depressed. The last thing is that people can get addicted to it and maintain an unhealthy lifestyle, or spend a unhealthy amount of time on it.

  18. I think the internet has a big effect on the society. In good and bad ways. Good ways it's good to communicate with family from far away and cool to meet new people. Bad is talking to strangers that could pose as someone getting you're info, peoples posts may not be appropriate for kids, gaming way to much can affect your health; however, It can make people more depressed because of maybe cyberbullying and so much more.

  19. i think social media had many bad things to watch out for. like putting out privet information on wed sits that hackers can get at.

  20. Social media can a have a huge negative impact on people, mentally and physically, especially teenagers these days. People will believe anything they see or hear about on social media. They sit and stare at a screen for hours on hours each day. Staring at the screen for hours just keeps them from going outside or just staying active. They sit at home on Tik Tok or Instagram or whatever they're on for the longest time. Which can really affect them both mentally and physically
